Are You Happy With The Status Quo?

Some of us can go for long periods of time without really evaluating our career. We put in our time, hope for favorable reviews from our bosses, and try to perform well in our jobs. However, at times, we can benefit by asking ourselves if we are happy with the status quo. The answer to that question, in fact, can be quite revealing. But how do you determine if you really are content in your position?

Are you being challenged?

This is certainly a key question. You might have become quite comfortable in your routine, especially if you have held your position for an extended period of time. Still, it is possible that you are now doing your job by rote-that the thrill is gone. Think about your daily job duties. Are there any that pose an exciting challenge for you? If not, it may be time to resume your job search.

Are you satisfied with your salary?

If you think you should be earning more, chances are you will have to look elsewhere for employment. It is rare for an employee these days to receive pay raises that are much above the rise in the cost of living. While it is possible that you can be promoted to another job within your company, you need to determine how likely it is that that will happen. If the chances are remote, you might want to begin hunting for a job that will offer better compensation.

Do you get along well with your co-workers and bosses?

In today's world, our co-workers and bosses are often like a second family. While it is certainly true that you may have disagreements from time to time with those you work with, if you find it to be a daily occurrence, you might find that you would be happier working elsewhere. While no job is perfect, some work situations are clearly better than others. If the status quo at work is often uncivil, it might be time to look for another position.

Setting new goals

The fact is, all of us should be striving to improve our professional lives. If your career goals have become a bit stale, it might be appropriate for you to draw up a new list of goals. Ask yourself what you hope to be doing in five years, ten years. Then, write up a blueprint for helping you to reach those new goals. You might be surprised how optimistic you can become, once you put your goals down on paper.

Explore new possibilities

Even if you think you are happy with the status quo, don't be afraid to explore new career possibilities. Look at the situation as an opportunity for growth. Begin doing some networking, and see if there are any positions that are available that meet your requirements. Be sure to keep your resume constantly updated, should a new job prospect appear on the horizon. You might just find that you would, in fact, be happier with a new position and a new perspective on life.
