Assembly Operator

The job of Assembly Operator can be found in many different companies. This is a manufacturing job, placing parts or pieces on an assembly line. The Assembly Operator works on one piece of a product, contributing to the finished good that is sold by the company.

Assembly operators can work in many functions. For example, in the automobile industry, assembly operators are used to attach various parts to the car, as well as to perform tasks such as painting the car. In some assembly line operations, assembly operators put pieces together, while others simply add a new part to the product in its current state. Still others operate machinery such as cutting machines, for making alterations to the product. Finally, there are assembly operators that test the product, using tension or other devices to assure that the product will function properly.

Assembly operators must have excellent manual dexterity and good eyesight. Most are required to stand on their feet for long periods of time, and may be subjected to holding their body in stationary positions for long periods, as well. Assembly operator positions allow very little freedom and flexibility. Because the assembly line runs automatically, workers cannot step away from the line whenever they'd like, or they cause a backup of the production process. Therefore, breaks must be taken only when scheduled. Longer breaks, such as lunch, are often at a set time, and the entire line shuts down so that everyone can take their lunch break at the same time. It is critical that every employee is back on the job at the right time, when the line begins running again.

The Assembly Operator job does not require any special education. In fact, in most cases a high school education is optional. Many times, however, prospective employees will be required to undergo physical tests to ensure that they have the manual dexterity and other physical requirements to perform the job.

Assembly Operator jobs are available in thousands of manufacturing organizations, in many different industries. The job outlook is very good in organizations that are experiencing growth. As companies grow, they may run more assembly lines, run the same lines for multiple shifts, and even build new factories to keep up with the growing demand. All these scenarios mean more assembly operator jobs become available. Turnover is medium in these jobs. At the entry level, turnover happens quite frequently because college students and other young people take the jobs to make money while they attend school, but then quit once they've finished their education. However, at the more senior level of Assembly Operator turnover is very low. Salary increases with seniority, so the more senior operators are usually committed to making this job their longtime career, and most do not leave until retirement.

Since there are a wide variety of industries that employ Assembly Operators, and since there are also a wide variety of production tasks performed by these workers, the skills required are also highly varied. It is wise to look around at different employers to determine the job that suits you best.
