Be Aware Of Interview Non-verbals And The Impact To Your Job Search

The job search process can be a long and arduous one. You look for openings for weeks, even months, before you find the right ones to apply for. You refine your resume and send it in to various companies. Then if you are fortunate, you get the opportunity to interview with a potential employer. The interview portion of the job search is often the most intimidating part for some people. But with a few hints, you can improve your chances of getting that job.

There is a lot of advice out there about what to say at an interview. You get any number of takes on what is the best way to approach and impress your potential boss. It is important to brush up on these interview skills before you go, as what you say in person could outweigh what you have written on your resume. You might want to rehearse an interview with a friend or family member who is willing to role-play with you. Ask this person to give you honest feedback about your statements, aiming to keep them positive and professional.

But along with the way you speak to an interviewer, there are some aspects of an interview that can really make an impact on whether or not you get the job. These are non-verbal factors and can be some of the hardest things to control.

The first non-verbal message you send to someone you are interviewing with lies in your appearance. When you walk into the office, you make an impression on the person you meet as soon as they see you. You either appear to be professional and sincere or perhaps sloppy and hurried. So take some time developing an interview outfit that is suitable for each circumstance.

You want to wear something that is professional, but not too dressy. Try to find out what the dress code is in that particular office and blend in with that. Men should wear a suit and women should wear conservative clothing and makeup. Keep jewelry to a minimum and do not wear cologne or perfume. Also be sure that you are groomed well and that your portfolio or resume is printed on clean, neat paper kept in a binder or folder to protect it.

Another non-verbal message you send to the interviewer is in your body language. While this is a difficult aspect of your demeanor to control, it is still one you should try to consider. When you approach the interviewer, smile and give them a friendly and firm handshake. Take your cue from them before you sit down or stand up. When they offer you a chair, take it.

If you can sit still without fidgeting, this will go a long way toward establishing your confidence. Try to lean forward slightly to show your interest in what the employer is saying. Nod and make eye contact when they are talking. It is also important to maintain eye contact when you are speaking, at least most of the time. This signals to the interviewer that you are honest and have nothing to hide.

If you can practice these skills along with your verbal interview skills, you will feel better prepared to have successful interview. Above all, relax and be yourself.
