Being Fired Does Not Mean The End Of Your Career

It is undoubtedly one of the most unpleasant experiences in life-being fired. It means not only loss of income, but also a possible reduction in self-esteem, a feeling of hopelessness, and depression. Many people find it difficult to recover, once they've been dismissed from their jobs. They may wonder whether the firing will haunt them throughout their careers.

Yet, it is important to realize that a firing can actually be an opportunity for growth and some much needed soul- searching. It can lead to new possibilities which can actually result in greater job satisfaction. While you may never thank your previous employer for firing you, you may find that you're grateful that your career has taken a new turn.

Take stock of yourself

If you've been fired, it is important for you to begin taking stock of yourself. Write down your professional goals, both for the short-term and the long-term. Think about your skills and the best way to market them. Also, you might want to focus on your vision of the ideal job. What would be your duties? Your hours? Your compensation rates? Research indicates that if you commit your aspirations to paper, you're far more likely to achieve them.

Ask for assistance

Losing a job can be particularly painful if you feel as though you are going through the experience alone. Therefore, it is important that you have someone to talk to. It might be a friend, a parent, or a career counsellor. Make an appointment with this individual to specifically address the firing. During your session, do some brainstorming to come up with ideas for getting your career back on track. You may find that, by sharing your burden with someone else, it becomes far easier to carry the load. Isolating yourself from friends and family can only promote feelings of depression and worthlessness. Therefore, while it may be tempting to hide in a corner, it will do nothing to help you secure another job.

Consider volunteering

You might want to donate some volunteer hours to an organization while waiting to get back to work. Such volunteer work can be tremendously rewarding and can even help you to develop new job skills. It also keeps you active and in touch with other people, so you're less likely to feel demoralized.

Contemplate a return to school

If you've lost your job, it might afford you the opportunity to return to school. You might have a secret yearning to earn a bachelor's degree in a different field or a master's degree in the field you've already been working in. In either case, returning to school can be exciting and challenging, and may be just the opportunity you need in order to feel better about yourself.

Don't try to hide the firing

A firing is not uncommon in today's workplace. You can turn the firing to your advantage by informing a potential employer about how you've grown and the lessons you've learned as a result of the firing. Such honesty shows an employer that you can be trusted and that you don't blame others for your own mistakes. Talking about the firing can also be extremely cathartic for you in the end.
