Building A Meaningful Career

Is it possible to build a meaningful career? Absolutely! Conducting some self- assessment, making some conscious choices, and appreciating what you have to offer a few ways you can create a meaningful working life.

Know Thyself

Whether you conduct formal self-assessment tests or simply take a good look at who you are and where you want to go, knowing yourself is key to creating meaningful work. You need to know and appreciate your values, interests, and what you have to offer. This knowledge leads you to make appropriate career choices for you, which in turn leads to a purposeful and meaningful working life.

Make Conscious Choices

Rather than accepting the first job or promotion that comes along, seek to make conscious choices about your career. When you feel you are controlling your career rather than the other way around, you'll feel that your career has more meaning. Naturally, you're going to feel better about a choice you make for yourself based on your goals and desires than out of fear or desperation. While you may not always make career choices based on your ideal situation, you can make an effort to choose wisely.

Develop a Support System

As you work toward your ideal career, be sure to create a support system along the way. Having people who support your career goals makes it easier to continue working toward them. Most people will experience some setbacks throughout their working lives, and support systems help make the transition through these periods easier. Your support system can also help remind you of your long-term goals when you temporarily lose sight.

Use Your Talents

Whenever possible, make choices and take assignments that allow you to use your talents. Everyone has areas in which they excel. The more often you are able to use your unique talents, the more likely you will feel that your career has meaning. You'll be making a valuable contribution to the organization, and you'll have the personal satisfaction of using your gifts.

Appreciate What You Have

You may not yet be in your ideal career or have reached your ideal position. Keep yourself motivated by appreciating what you do have and where you are. Your career is an evolving process. Even if you are currently in a situation far removed from your ultimate goal, you'll likely learn a great deal from your current position.
