Business Development Professional

Business Development Officers, Marketing Researchers and Consultants, Business development professionals and/or consultants, conduct research, formulate policies and manage programs to stimulate industrial and commercial business investment or tourism in urban and rural areas, or to promote commercial or industrial products and services.

They are employed by government departments, marketing firms and business associations or may be self-employed.

Business development officers, marketing researchers and consultants, perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Develop policies and administer programs to promote industrial and commercial business investment in urban and rural areas
  • Conduct social or economic surveys on local, regional or national areas to assess development potential and future trends
  • Plan development projects with representatives of a wide variety of industrial and commercial enterprises, business associations and government agencies
  • Assess business opportunities and develop strategies to attract venture capital
  • Respond to enquiries from members of the business community and general public concerning development opportunities
  • Review commercial or industrial development proposals and provide advice on procedures and requirements for government approval
  • Conduct surveys and analyze data on the buying habits and preferences of wholesale or retail consumers
  • Conduct comparative research on marketing strategies for industrial and commercial products
  • Develop social and economic profiles of urban and rural areas to encourage industrial and commercial investment and development.

Job opportunities in operations research should be good, however, because organizations throughout the economy will strive to improve their productivity, effectiveness, and competitiveness and because of the extensive availability of data, computers, and software, it is a somewhat gray area to predict future trends - the field however is ever-present and enterprising in its expansion and should offer numerous candidates rewarding prospects and career-paths.

Many jobs in operations research, business development analytics and research have other titles, such as "operations analyst," "management analyst," "systems analyst," and "policy analyst." Individuals who hold a master's or Ph.D. degree in operations research, management science, or a closely related field should find good job opportunities, because the number of openings generated by employment growth and the need to replace those leaving the occupation, are expected to exceed the number of persons graduating with those credentials.

Opportunities should be especially good in highly competitive industries, such as manufacturing, transportation, telecommunications, and finance. As businesses and government agencies continue to contract out jobs to cut costs, many operations research as well as business development professionals, analysts and independent contractors in this field, will also find increasing opportunities as consultants, either working for a consulting firm or setting up their own practice advising and strengthening, developing new business opportunities.

A bachelor's degree in economics, commerce, business administration or public administration is required. Certification as a certified economic developer (Ec.D.) may be required. Progression to managerial positions is possible with experience.
