Career Changes And The Stress Involved
Changing roles in your life is often challenging. Stepping out of your comfort zone and changing careers requires courage and faith that is sometimes hard to muster. Why is it so difficult to change careers?
This may be an arduous process for various reasons. Some people may feel insecure about the uncertainty of a new position; the potential financial bridge with new employment bothers some; while others dread the upheaval that a career change can bring to other areas of their life.
Uncertainties
There are several uncertainties with a career change and this causes stress for a lot of people. Familiarity is comfort; so even walking into a different environment may cause uneasiness. Even though people may not realize it, they become accustomed to routine - certain pay periods, occupational procedures, even particular scheduling - and walking away from the familiarity of a career is often more difficult than leaving the career itself.
Finances
Likewise, finances are often a stressful factor in a career change. Whether the monetary compensation increases or deceases, the insecurity of finances during this time causes turmoil. Also, many people will experience a period of no income during a career change which is rarely painless.
Other areas of life
It may not be apparent how your life molds around your career. Perhaps you are used to a particular schedule and as a result you take the kids to the park on Thursday or barbeque on Saturday. On the other hand, you may get a bonus at a particular time of year and use that money to go on vacation or buy Christmas presents. These little things will all be disrupted when you change careers. Not only is this difficult for you but also for your family. Creating a new routine around another career causes a period of unrest while everyone adjusts.
The important thing to keep in mind during the stressful time of career change is the end result. You would not have left your other career if it was working well for you. On that note, the new career is ultimately the best thing for you. While it may be uneasy for a while, it will even out as you become accustomed to your new routine. Hang in there and remember all the reasons you made the decision to change careers in the first place.
