Consultant
Consultants come in all varieties, and offer businesses valuable insight and expertise. Consultants are either self employed or employed by a consulting company and are contracted out to large and small businesses who require special expertise for a specified period of time.
Consultants are often used when businesses require special expertise, but don't wish to hire this expertise on a permanent basis. For example, if a company wants to put a Disaster Recovery Program in place all across their business, they might hire a consultant to come in who is a Disaster Recovery expert. This consultant would work with all areas of the business, assessing the disaster risks, and creating processes, policies and procedures to deal with different types of disasters. He would work with the company's employees to achieve the required programs or equipment for handling a disaster. The business looks to him to know what is required and how to put it into place, and train employees on how to operate within the Disaster Recovery Program. However, once the program is put into place and all employees understand how to maintain it and what to do in the event of a disaster, the consultant's work is done. He then moves on to another company that needs his expertise.
Consultants have become extremely sought after in recent years because, even though they often charge a very high hourly rate, they are still much less expensive than hiring a full time employee, particularly since their expertise if often needed only on a short time basis. There are consultant jobs in every imaginable business area. Some popular consulting areas are business efficiency, accounting practices, fraud and theft control, customer service, information technology and security, building and property security and disaster recovery.
In order to gain a consulting job, or strike out on your own as an independent consultant, you must be a bona fide expert in your field. You must have many years of relevant experience and a proven track record in implementing processes and procedures that have documented results. This is typically a mid to senior level position, and is often very highly paid.
Consulting is a great field for being self-employed. If you feel confident in marketing yourself and finding your own work, then you may not need to work for someone else, and you may be able to make more money on your own. However, working for a consulting company guarantees you an income and keeps you busy with a new assignment as soon as you complete one.
In most cases, consultants have some sort of a college degree. Required credentials for consultants can vary greatly by area of expertise. Coursework in customer service and client management is valuable for any consultant, since a critical part of any consultant's job is the ability to move from client to client, melding into the organization, assessing the problems and providing expertise without offending and providing customer satisfaction. Consultants can provide valuable information to the client, but only if they have the personal skills to do so in a way that it will be well received.
The field of consulting is wide open to those who have the skills and experience. If you'd like to find out more about available consulting jobs, visit www.ConsultingCareerQuest.com.
