Developing Job Leads To Enhance Your Job Search

One of the most important aspects of a successful job search is generating leads and creating valuable contacts. By default, the more people you talk to and are in contact with, the more likely you are to find a position. There are various ways you can go about developing job leads.

Sending out resumes

This is the most obvious way to create job leads; however, it is probably one of the least effective. Whether you are tapping into an existing lead by responding to an ad or you are sending out resumes unsolicited, this is one of the most common ways of developing leads. Unfortunately, this may not be effective in creating leads as "cold calling" resumes do not typically result in a successful position. However, you can further develop these leads by following up on them and talking to the people in charge of hiring.

Networking

On the other hand, networking is one of the best ways to develop job leads. Interestingly enough though, networking is more of an indirect way to develop leads. This is done over a period of time by becoming familiar and associating with people in the industry you are targeting. If you already know people in various offices or the field you are in or want to be in, when a job becomes available you will be the first to know. With any luck, you will have a shot at these jobs before they become advertised, lessening the competition for the position.

Place an ad yourself

Another potential way to create and develop leads is to place an ad in the paper that you are looking for a particular type of position. The effectiveness of this is argued, but it is an option. You never know, the person hiring for the perfect position may come across your ad and your qualifications and call you to discuss your options.

Hire a professional

Some people also acquire leads by hiring a professional to develop them. While this is more utilized in larger, more populated areas, it is a way to possibly obtain employment with less personal effort. A variation of this is simply using employment agencies where you do not have to "develop" leads; they are basically handed to you.
