Developing Team Spirit

There can be little doubt that a workforce is a team. No individual employee can accomplish corporate goals alone. It takes a group of dedicated workers to ensure that a company's operations run smoothly. If a worker is not devoted to the company, the entire team suffers.

Certainly, there are some employees who could be labeled the team's most valuable players. These are the people who are particularly dedicated to their work. They are eager to arrive early and stay late in order to get the job done. They're also willing to sacrifice their own personal goals for the sake of the company. Yet, in an ideal situation, each employee should be a valuable player. But how can you develop team spirit in your organization especially if your workforce is not used to the concept of teamwork?

Give your employees a sense of belonging

Your workers should feel as if they are part of something greater as if they are part of a team dedicated to achieving amazing goals. Each worker should be made to feel special and a valuable part of the overall team. Employees should feel a sense of security in their positions. They should also feel dependent on one another. In this way, they are more likely to act as a cohesive group.

Make your workplace fun

While work is a serious business, there is no reason that your workplace should not have a sense of fun. For instance, you can initiate jersey Fridays, in which each employee is encouraged to wear his or her favorite football jersey. Or you can offer prizes for the best- decorated cubicle. A favorite practice in some companies is to celebrate the birthdays of employees. In this way, you can relieve some of the drudgery that accompanies work.

Consider holding a pep rally

Some companies go so far as to hold periodic pep rallies. These motivational sessions are designed to encourage and energize members of your team. You might play some upbeat music for these rallies and encourage employees to clap along. Various managers can then give pep talks. You might also give out prizes to employees who have achieved significant results. Such pep rallies promote a spirited atmosphere which can motivate employees to do their best.

Establish common goals

Another effective technique is to establish common goals. In this way, members of your workforce will have a single milestone to strive for. Each worker should be made to understand that he or she is vital to helping the team accomplish the goal. You may find that your workers are more motivated if they are all working toward achieving the same results.

Consider a retreat

Some company managers have found great success in scheduling retreats for their workers. These brainstorming sessions allow workers and managers to trade ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Through such exchanges, camaraderie can be promoted, so that workers feel comfortable with one another and are more likely to act as a team. You may be amazed at how much happier your workers will be, once they've completed a successful retreat.
