Dos And Don'ts For Launching A Management Career

So, you finally landed that promotion and now you have the official title of Manager next to your name. Congratulations. Management is a tough and rewarding road for the right person. There are the perks of respect, extra money, and potential for further advancement. However, there are also long hours, extra responsibility, and final accountability. So how can you manage the pressure along with the employees? Here are some quick dos and don'ts for managing your new career:

Don'ts

  • Don't look to make any friends. As a manager, it is your job to inspire hard work and loyalty from the employees, not friendship.
  • Don't reprimand an employee in public. This includes verbal and written warnings. This type of disciplinary action should take place behind closed doors.
  • Don't spread gossip. As the manager of a team, you may be privy to private information. Keep it to yourself.
  • Don't expect everyone to do everything your way. Appreciate the differences in your team, playing up their strengths rather than tearing down their weaknesses.
  • Don't burn yourself out. Yes, it's exciting to be promoted, but don't go crazy trying to implement every improvement in the first week. Pace yourself and get to know your team.

Dos

  • Do set a good example by being punctual, polite, and professional.
  • Do communicate with your employees, even when the subject is unpleasant. Leaving a topic untouched simply because you don't want to make enemies is unprofessional.
  • Do be clear with your expectations. Meet with your employees and make them familiar with your goals and how you see getting there as a team.
  • Do listen. You got the promotion because you are smart and capable, but that does not mean you have all the answers. Your employees have valuable insight so respect their input and their time.
  • Do treat people equally. Some people may try to win your attention or approval with manipulation that can be very effective. Put aside favouritism in favour of teamwork.
