Effective Strategies For Successful Cover Letter Writing

When it comes to finding a job the best approach is one that may take a little more time but will ultimately put you in the running. The extra time is in the planning phase and that includes a large focus on resume writing and on creating an effective cover letter. One of the key strategies for writing a successful cover letter is in setting yourself up for success. Do your homework and you will find yourself getting the results you desire. Don't leave anything to chance when it comes to finding a job. Once you master the art of the cover letter you will open doors and create opportunities to enhance your career search.

  • Planning

This is what you should be thinking about before you start writing a cover letter. Cover letters should be targeted therefore you need to gather information about your target audience i.e. recruiter, potential employer, company. This means researching the company and the role if specified. Find out about the products/services, look into the company goals, mission statement and culture. This information will help you craft a cover letter that will not only grab attention but will also highlight your best attributes in relation to specific company information. Demonstrating knowledge of the company will go a long way towards securing an interview. Employers want to know you have taken the time to consider their needs otherwise why would they bother considering you.

  • Content

Once you have done the research you need to match your skills, experience and qualifications with the company's expectations. It is important to present proven results and achievements. E.g. If you are in management explain how you have increased profits or productivity, if you are in sales show how you have secured leads and turned them into sales, if you are in marketing state how you have developed marketing initiatives that have ensured quantifiable gains. Basically, show how what you have done for past employers has benefited them in a tangible way. Next, you need to show how those sorts of skills are relevant to the job you are applying for or the company you are seeking employment from.

  • Closing

So, you've successfully peaked their interest with your knowledge of the company and your qualifications now its time to initiate the response. You need to have a specific call to action in your cover letter. Also, be sure to thank the employer for their time and consideration. Something a long the lines of

"Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you personally to discuss my candidacy"

Or

"I look forward to learning more about this opportunity and will be following up with a call next week "

  • Fine Tuning

The tone, style and content of the letter should be as important as what you say. Keep it simple, conversational and professional. Avoid clichés, creative fonts and designs. Check, double check and recheck, as there is absolutely no excuse for spelling, grammar or typing errors.
