Esl Teaching Professional
The need for ESL teaching professionals is on the rise today, due to the high number of students who speak a language other than English at home. This is an important issue to school systems, who need to ensure that students are sufficiently proficient in English in order to gain value from the regular curriculum.
ESL teachers typically administer language proficiency tests to all students whose primary language is not English. Then, based on their English proficiency, they develop an education plan for each student that incorporates regular classroom instruction with English languages classes. The program for each child is designed to ensure that each child becomes competent in the comprehension, speaking, reading, and composition of the English language, and participate equitably in school.
ESL teachers typically teach a variety of English classes throughout the school day, bringing non-English speaking children out of their regular classroom for this special instruction during the appropriate class level. For instance, children from all grade levels attend each ESL class, based on their English proficiency. One important class provided by ESL teachers is Intensive Survival English. This class is designed for the new student who speaks little or no English. This class focuses on basic survival vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. This course is designed to quickly give the child skills to communicate in a basic form in his or her regular classroom.
In addition to the Survival English course, ESL teachers offer classes at varying levels of English proficiency. The program is designed to provide more and more advanced English language skills as the students progress. Students remain in the ESL program until they are fluent in English to the point that ESL instruction is no longer needed. One of the responsibilities of the ESL teacher is to continue to monitor the progress of students who have graduated from the ESL program, to ensure that they are functioning well in the regular classroom and are not suffering from language barrier issues.
ESL teaching professionals must be certified teachers, with a Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field. In addition, they must have completed special coursework in ESL instruction. ESL teaching professionals must be especially patient and understanding, as they are working with students who may be dealing with cultural and acceptance barriers in addition to language barriers.
In addition to teaching jobs in public and private school systems, ESL teaching professionals have many other job opportunities available to them. In cities where there is a large non English speaking population, ESL classes may be offered through the city's Parks and Recreation Department or local libraries. These are often not full time jobs, but can offer part time income. Some corporations also offer ESL classes, if they have a significant number of non-English speaking employees in this country on work visas. There are also jobs available for private English tutoring.
ESL teaching professionals should continue to see growth in job opportunities. As the non-English speaking population grows, there will be a continued need for professionals to support this segment of the population. To find available ESL teaching jobs, visit www.eslemployment.com.
