Esthetician
Estheticians are in great demand today. The spa industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years, creating more and more jobs for these talented people who keep us looking and feeling our best.
Estheticians perform such services as facials, waxing, pedicures, manicures and other salon services. They may specialize in just one type of service, or perform many different kinds. For example, many spas offer four or five different types of facials, and have estheticians devoted solely to facial services. Those who perform massages, while often referred to as massage therapists, are also considered Estheticians.
Estheticians may also be considered skin experts, working with their clients on an ongoing basis to teach them proper skin care, and recommend products to be used at home. They are often called upon to help those who wish to improve skin tone and texture, or solve skin problems.
Estheticians typically work in salons, spas or today's new popular "medi-spas", who specialize in combining spa type treatments and more medically oriented procedures, like those with lasers, in one salon. Some estheticians are self-employed, as well, performing their services in homes and offices.
Some Estheticians perform soothing treatments like facials and massages, while other specialize in cutting edge treatments, like microdermabrasion, laser hair removal or other facial laser treatments.
Estheticians are required to have training, and often certifications and licenses to perform their services. This training and licensing ensures that the Esthetician can perform the services correctly and safely. The training and licensure required varies depending upon the type of services performed. In cases where licenses are required, these licenses must be renewed every few years, and may require additional coursework to for this renewal. Estheticians also typically take continuing education classes to keep up to date on the newest procedures, as they are introduced.
In addition to the training required to perform esthetic services, Estheticians should also have good customer service skills and be able to provide a relaxing and calming atmosphere to their clients. They should also be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people, and have a pleasing personality.
Before pursuing a job as an Esthetician, it is wise to get your education and certifications, as most salons will only hire those who have already completed their educational requirements. These classes are often taught at cosmetology schools, and sometimes through community colleges, as well. Once you have obtained your professional credentials, most salons will hire you for entry-level positions at first, allowing you to work alongside a more experienced Esthetician until you have gained experience. Then, you will be allowed to work with clients independently. In some cases, Estheticians earn a commission on the services they perform. In other cases they are paid hourly or with a set salary.
The career of Esthetician is rewarding for those who enjoy working with people and who gain satisfaction in providing a healing and comforting touch. If you're interested in finding out about available jobs for Estheticians, visit www.behindthechair.com.
