Gas Turbine Engineer
Mostly a professional engineer, specializing in gas turbines, or also referred to as a turbine engineer, with experience and training, site installation and commissioning work on gas turbines for the oil and gas industry, all fall into this category.
Performance of research, design, and development in such areas as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Application of research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
Mechanical engineers are employed by consulting firms, by power-generating utilities and in a wide range of manufacturing, processing and transportation industries, or they may be self-employed.
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design of all company products such as fuel controls, heat exchangers and propellers. Working in an idea-producing environment, the Mechanical Design Engineer creates a working concept of the product, anticipates problems and determines interrelationships of components. They conduct trade-off and analytical studies to evaluate alternative approaches to assure compliance with requirements and proven design practices. The design engineer is responsible for structural and performance analysis, materials and part selections, produce-ability and other related design tasks.
Typical Roles/Area of Focus spans both design and mechanical engineering aspects. Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. They work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. They also develop power- using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing. Mechanical engineers also design tools that other engineers need for their work. The field of nanotechnology, which involves the creation of high-performance materials and components by integrating atoms and molecules, is introducing entirely new principles to the design process.
Computers assist mechanical engineers, by performing computations, accurately and efficiently and by permitting the modeling and simulation of new designs as well as facilitating changes to existing designs. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) are used for design data processing and for turning the design into a product.
Mechanical engineers work in many industries, and their work varies by industry and function. Some specialize in energy systems; applied mechanics; automotive design; manufacturing; materials; plant engineering and maintenance; pressure vessels and piping; and heating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning systems. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers may work in production operations in manufacturing or agriculture, maintenance, or technical sales; many are administrators or managers.
Employment in manufacturing industries-where employment of mechanical engineers is concentrated-is expected to decrease slightly, employment of mechanical engineers in manufacturing should increase more rapidly as the demand for improved machinery and machine tools grows and as industrial machinery and processes become increasingly complex.
Some or all of their career activity (as summarized above), may include:
- Analyzing dynamics and vibrations of mechanical systems and structures
- Supervision and inspection of the installation, modification and commissioning of mechanical systems at construction sites or in industrial facilities
- Developing maintenance standards, schedules and programs and provide guidance to industrial maintenance crews
- Investigating mechanical failures or unexpected maintenance problems
- Preparing contract documents and evaluate tenders for industrial construction or maintenance
- Supervising technicians, technologists and other engineers and review and approve designs, calculations and cost estimates.

A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or in a related engineering discipline is required. A master's degree or doctorate in a related engineering discipline may be required. Licensing by a provincial or territorial association of professional engineers is required to approve engineering drawings and reports and to practice as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
Engineers are eligible for registration following graduation from an accredited educational program, and after three or four years of supervised work experience in engineering and passing a professional practice examination. Supervisory and senior positions in this unit group require experience.
There is considerable mobility between mechanical engineering specializations at the less senior levels. Engineers often work in a multidisciplinary environment and acquire knowledge and skills through work experience that may allow them to practice in associated areas of science, engineering sales, marketing or management. Mechanical engineers work closely with civil, electrical, aerospace, chemical, industrial and other engineers, and mobility is possible between some fields of specialization in these disciplines. Gas Turbine engineers and testers work mostly for the oil and gas industry.
