Getting Your Resume Past A Professional Resume Reviewer

In a number of companies and even non-profit organizations, the human resources department is in charge of screening resumes. That means that, chances are, the person looking at your resume has looked at hundreds, perhaps thousands, of resumes in the past. In other words, resume-reading is their business. As a result, such reviewers recognize when a resume is deficient in some way. Therefore, as a job-seeker, your goal should be to craft a resume that will pass professional muster. Keeping a few key things in mind should help you to reach that goal.

Proofread, proofread, proofread!

Perhaps no single flaw is more fatal for a resume than spelling and grammatical errors. Such errors are indicative of either carelessness or illiteracy. Neither trait is good for a job candidate. If you believe you are particularly prone to spelling and grammar errors, use the spell-check and grammar-check on your personal computer. Or have someone with good reading skills go over your resume for you. That way, you can better ensure that your resume will not automatically end up in the reject pile.

Be concise

A recruiter may have only a few minutes to review your resume, given the hundreds of resumes a single job posting may generate. Therefore, you must encapsulate your experience on your resume in bullet-point form. In other words, a reviewer should be able to skim through your resume and have a good understanding of what kinds of jobs you've held and what your job duties have been. If the reviewer has to hunt around for this information or the resume is perceived as confusing, you might have lost your chance for an interview.

Be specific

Speaking in generalities will undermine your purpose. You must be able to capture the attention of the individual reviewing your resume. Therefore, rather than saying you have "good computer skills," indicate what kinds of computer programs you know well. In this way, you are telling the reviewer a great deal about yourself-but you are doing it in a concise way.

Get a second opinion

It may benefit you to get a second opinion on your resume. This could come from a co-worker, a former boss, or someone else whose judgment you trust. In this way, you are not relying solely on your own opinion. Instead, you're getting the perspective of someone else-someone with your best interests in mind.
