How To Identify Potential Roles

There are a number of avenues for identifying potential roles in the job market. Firstly you need to spend some time thinking about the kind of role you are looking for and the industry you want to work in. Identifying your own needs in the job market is the first step to narrowing down some suitable roles.

Identifying your job needs:

  • What kind of work have you done in the past? Did you enjoy it? Are you looking for something in the same field?
  • What kind of qualifications, experience and job skills do you have? What are your qualifications in terms of education? Have you done any job specific training? How much experience do you have in the industry you are looking at working in?
  • Are you looking for a new role in a new industry? Are you moving in a new direction in a different field? Are you qualified in this area? Do you have any experience in this new area?
  • Are you looking for a role in the same area? Are you happy with your current job? Are you happy with your current industry?
  • What is your salary target? How much are you earning now? Are you looking for a rise in salary?
  • What kind of job are you looking for? Is this a career move or an in between job?
  • Are you looking for a career or something short term?

Once you have answered these questions you can identify roles that suit your requirements. The most widely used resource for finding a job these days is the Internet. Online you can search through thousands of listings in various areas and find suitable jobs. You can also explore classified ads and board listings. The majority of positions available aren't actually advertised at all. They are filled via word of mouth and through network contacts.

So how do you know if the role is right for you? If you have taken some time figuring out what you want in a job then you just have to look to match that with a new role. Consider if you are qualified to do the job. Does your past experience qualify you for the role? Is the salary, wages or remuneration satisfactory? Do you think you would enjoy the role? Is it a company you could see yourself working for? Is it a company you could progress in?

All of these questions will help you identify potential roles that could turn into careers. The most important thing to remember is that you have options. You don't just have to take the first offer that comes along. If you are looking for a satisfying and rewarding job experience or career consider your options carefully. Take the time to decide what it is you are looking for.
