How To Make A Great Impression In Your New Role

After a long, hard job search, you finally have a great new job. You know where you are going and what time to be there. You know your supervisor's name, and you have a brief description of your job requirements. But other than that, you may feel like a fish out of water. Starting a new job is stressful. You are worried about the impression you make on your co-workers and on your supervisors. So take some of these tips to make a great first impression in your new role:

1. Dress to impress. Think back to your interview and take note of how people dress. Wear appropriate business attire to fit in with this environment. This is not the time for flashy jewelry or fashion statements.

2. Remember names. When you meet people, repeat their full names out loud to help you remember. Also try to keep up with who does what. If you need to make some secret notes at your desk, do so.

3. Portray good body language. What you say with your body can defeat what you say with your words. So stand and sit up straight. Give a firm, but not crushing handshake. And above all, smile.

4. Do some positive self-talk. Remind yourself in this stressful situation that you are competent. Give yourself some mental pep talks right now to overcome any self-doubt.

5. Learn your boss's style. How does he or she like to communicate? Via email, memo, or phone? Listen and observe how the office relates to the boss.

6. Listen, observe, and then ask questions. Don't go off asking a million questions before you have even listened to the instructions and observed the methods.

7. Ask about regular reviews. If you know that your performance will be evaluated during the first three to six months, you'll have a better way to set goals for yourself.

8. Make cautious suggestions. Your fresh perspective is probably welcome, but be careful about butting in before you are asked.

9. Learn motivations. Watch the other people in the office, who they report to, what they do, and whom they supervise.

10. Finally, don't cover up mistakes. You are bound to make some in the first few weeks of a new job. Do not try to blame them on others. Simply be honest about your errors and ask for direction.

A professional and courteous attitude goes a long way to making a good impression.
