Identify And Eliminate Your Competition With A Well-planned Sales Job Search

Competition is an unavoidable part of life. You'll find it on the basketball court. in the shopping center parking lot. and even on the playground. But it is perhaps most challenging when you encounter it in your job search.

This is particularly true in the area of sales. There may be a number of well-qualified people competing for the same positions that you're vying for. Therefore, you have to be able to develop a strategy that will, in essence, eliminate your competition from contention. This requires an especially well-planned sales job search.

First, identify possible competitors

You don't need to know your competitors by name. The important thing is to recognize the types of people that a given position would attract. You'll want to know, for instance, if your competitors are likely to be college graduates, people with ten or more years of experience, or employees from within a given company.

Next, identify how your qualifications measure up

Your next order of business is to determine how your qualifications would compare with those of your potential competitors. Do you have a comparable educational background? Do you have similar work experiences? Would you be considered the dark horse candidate? The answers to these questions will help you to determine your next move.

Determine how to present yourself as the best candidate

Once you've identified your competition, and determined how your experience might compare with theirs, it's important that you figure out a strategy for presenting your candidacy in the best possible light. There are a number of factors to consider in this regard.

To begin with, you'll need to craft a cover letter that shows you to be the best candidate for the job. You'll want to emphasize what might set you apart from other job applicants. In other words, a potential employer should be so impressed after reading your cover letter that he or she feels compelled to call you for an interview.

Think of the interview as a performance

It is important that you recognize the fact that your interview is, in essence, a performance. Therefore, you'll want to rehearse your answers to possible interview questions so that you will be ready when the time comes. You will want to concentrate on those questions that could be the most difficult to answer. By practicing your answers ahead of time, you'll gain the confidence you'll need to shine in your interviews. You'll be far more relaxed at interview time and therefore less likely to make costly mistakes.

Think of yourself as the ideal candidate

One good way to eliminate the competition is to think of yourself as the ideal candidate. If you believe strongly in your own abilities, chances are greater that you will ultimately succeed in your job search. You will present yourself in such a way that it will be difficult for an employer to imagine filling the position with anyone else. In this way, it will be easy for you to assume your new position since you've already envisioned occupying it.
