Interview Etiquette

When you are invited by a potential employer to participate in an interview, immediately you may begin to think about every aspect of the interview process. You may think of what you should wear, what you should bring, what you should say, and how you should act. Although each one of the previously mentioned facets of the interview process is important, knowing how you should act is very important. Why? Let's find out.

During the interview process, whether you know it or not, your potential employer is observing your every action and word. That is why it is important to be familiar with proper interview etiquette. Having the proper etiquette displayed during the interview process will indisputably increase your chances of landing the job.

Be Respectful and Polite

Being polite at all times is a definite must! When addressing your potential employer address him or her as "Sir" or "Madam". In some areas, "Madam" is replaced with "Ma'am" instead. It is very important to use those respectful salutations when addressing or answering the potential employer. He or she will undoubtedly be taking notice of this behavior. Always show that you are considerate and gracious, by saying "please and thank you."

Listen Intently and Maintain Eye Contact

We all like to be listened to. An interviewer expects you to listen to every word he or she is speaking. Listening intently will enable you to hear "implied reasoning and beliefs" on the part of the interviewer. He or she may subtly hint at certain requirements that were not brought to you attention before. Or he or she may hint at some personal interests that you may share in common. Listening to your interviewer will show you to be a respectful and considerate individual.

Maintaining constant eye contact will reveal to the employer that you are a firm and resolute individual. Even when you are undergoing intense and stressful interview questioning, maintain eye contact. Do not look all over the room or down at the floor if you are uncomfortable. Maintaining proper eye contact will not betray nervousness on your part and to your potential employer, you will seem to have nerves of steel.

Smile Warmly

A warm smile will lighten the tension and will help you relax. Show your potential employer that you are a friendly person. A smile usually radiates from the inside outward. If smiles don't come easily for you, practice them at home before you go into your interview. Think of things that make you happy and try to radiate that happiness during the interview.

Exercising the proper interview etiquette will prove to be a beneficial move on your part. Your potential employer will be impressed by your pleasant manners during the interview.
