Is Your Career A Good Fit For You?
Do you wake up every day eager to go to work, or is it a challenge to drag yourself to the office? Life is too short and your working years too long to spend your days miserable in your job. However, sometimes it may not be obvious that you are on the wrong career path. How do you know if your career is a good fit for you and how do you find one that better suits you?
The first step is to evaluate your current situation in correlation with your values and ultimate goals. Oftentimes, people get so caught up in the necessity of an income or the security of a particular job that they never take the time to really consider if there is more available. What did you dream of accomplishing when you were younger? Is your current path going to take you to where you want to be? If you take the time to think about it you may decide that your dreams have changed; if that is the case, what is it that you want to do with your life?
A good way to tell if your job is a good fit for you is to pay attention to how you feel in the morning. Do you wake up excited to start your day? Even if you cannot categorize yourself as "excited", can you even reach "satisfied" or "content"? If you are anywhere below these levels you need to start considering what other options there may be. You owe it to yourself to be happy and only you can make that possible.
Once you become aware that you are not happy with your employment, you need to expand on your dream job and evaluate the reality of securing such a position. While you should not let doubt be an excuse not to act, you should also look at the situation with clear vision.
You should begin by making a list of your skills and personal attributes. Perhaps you are good with children or are a science whiz; utilize your special traits, but be careful not to let your "skills" dictate your employment position. Just because you can type 95 words a minute does not mean you are destined to be a typist forever. Once you have done this, consider what careers would be a good fit. A way to get ideas for this process is to look through the classifieds or online employment sources to see what is out there. Play around with different ideas and do not automatically rule out any options.
If you are at a complete loss, you can always take advantage of employment agencies to experience various positions. The most important thing to keep in mind when you are evaluating your career and what other positions are available is to not sell yourself short. Nelson Mandela once said,
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light and not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, `Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?'
You are a child of God.. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
When you are deciding what steps you will walk in life, remember that you are capable of doing and accomplishing anything. Do not let fear stop you from leaving your comfort zone, stepping out on faith, and making the choice to be happy in your career and in your life.
