It Project Manager

IT Project Manager - Enablers And Administrators Of The Technical Process

IT Project Managers, work mostly as computer and information systems managers, who plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of organizations that analyze, design, develop, implement, operate and administer computer and telecommunications software, networks and information systems.

IT project manager(s) are employed throughout the public and private sectors. Some are even independent contractors, or IT professionals who choose to tele-commute, or work exclusively on a contract basis. IT Project managers develop requirements, budgets, and schedules for their firm's/client's information technology related projects.

They coordinate such projects from development through implementation, working with internal and external clients, vendors, consultants, and computer specialists. These managers are increasingly involved in projects that upgrade the information security of an organization.

The duties of IT project managers, computer and information systems managers, vary with their specific titles and they may perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of information systems and electronic data processing (EDP) departments and companies, direct the work of systems analysts, computer programmers, support specialists, and other computer-related workers
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for electronic data processing and computer systems operations and development
  • Meet with clients to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines
  • Assemble and manage teams of information systems personnel to design, develop, implement, operate and administer computer and telecommunications software, networks and information systems
  • Control the budget and expenditures of the department, company or project
  • Recruit and supervise computer analysts, engineers, programmers, technicians and other personnel and oversee their professional development and training.

These managers plan and coordinate activities such as installation and upgrading of hardware and software, programming and systems design, development of computer networks, and implementation of Internet and intranet sites. They are increasingly involved with the upkeep, maintenance and security of networks. They analyze the computer and information needs of their organization, from an operational and strategic perspective, and determine immediate and long-range personnel and equipment requirements. They assign and review the work of their subordinates, and stay abreast of the latest technology in order to assure the organization does not lag behind competitors.

Employment requirements normally demand at least a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, business administration, commerce or engineering with several years of experience in systems analysis, data administration, software engineering, network design or computer programming, including supervisory experience. There is still a growth among computer-related occupations. Employers do markedly prefer managers with formal education and advanced technical knowledge acquired through computer-related work experience.

Computer and information systems managers spend most of their time in an office. Most work at least 40 hours a week and may have to work evenings and weekends, to meet deadlines or solve unexpected problems. Some computer and information systems managers may experience considerable pressure in meeting technical goals, within short timeframes or tight budgets. As networks continue to expand and more work is done remotely, computer and information system managers have to communicate with and oversee offsite employees using modems, laptops, e-mail, and the Internet.
