Job Searching In 2006
In our modern age, it should not be surprising that the job market is not quite what it was a few decades ago. While skimming the paper was once sufficient to locate adequate employment, it may fall a little short in current times. Now, there are a plethora of options out there to be utilized to land that dream job.
Internet
More than anything else, the Internet is an invaluable resource in your job search. Not only can you have access to many opportunities available in newspapers, but there are many specialized sites to cater to employers and those seeking employment. For most regions in the United States, there are also employment agencies that also utilize the Internet to streamline the application process. With a few clicks of the mouse you can have your resume in front of hundreds of potential employers, making your search considerably easier.
Employment agencies
As stated earlier, employment agencies offer an incredible chance to make many positions available to you with much less effort. While some specialize in temporary assignments, others expand to many other employment options. You simply fill out one application, take some skills tests, and the agency searches their databases to see what they have that you are qualified for. In the application process, you specify a salary range and working conditions that are acceptable to you and wait for them to fill those criteria.
Networking
Without a doubt, networking has proven to be an essential area in the employment process. To have an "inside" link to a position places you ahead of the other applicants before the competition even begins. In many cases, you may be made aware of positions becoming available before they are advertised or possibly even before they are actually vacant. This places you at the top of the list and that is, by far, the best position to be in.
Freelancing
Interestingly enough, sometimes the best employment is no employment at all. A few decades ago, the ideal situation was finding a job with a company and staying there until retirement. However, that rarely happens now. This has led many people to search for a different arrangement than that of traditional employment. With freelancing or being an independent contractor, you maintain a lot of control over your duties, schedule, and other aspects not typically negotiable in employment situations.
Starting a business
Taking freelancing to the next level, many have joined the business world by starting their own companies. Almost common place now, this was reserved for a very select group of people at one time. However, a lot of people have chosen to solve their job search dilemma by becoming the bosses.
