Job Seeking At Career Fairs

Today more than ever before employers and jobseekers are turning to Career Fairs to identify new positions and new candidates. Most Career Fairs target either a specific industry or recent graduates. They are professionally run and offer candidates an opportunity to learn about industry and employment trends, the economy, skill requirements, vacant positions and opportunities.

Candidates receive career guidance and help in completing job applications from career professionals or recruiters who work to secure placements. If you wish to attend a Career Fair, there are some factors to be aware of. Allocate a significant period to allow you to get around all the different companies. If you have to rush in and out, you will be unable to identify opportunities that may be right in front of you. Dress professionally, as though you were attending an interview. No Jeans and trainers. You are there to impress a potential employer or make an impression on a hiring manager.

Carry a pen and notepaper with you so that you may take down names and contact numbers or store business cards safely so that they aren't mislaid before you have an opportunity to use them. Bring a supply of professionally prepared resumes so that you may provide employers with a copy of your current resume. Carry your resumes in a professional case or satchel and ensure that you have adequate space to collect corporate material for further review.

Review the website or newspaper advertisements in advance of attending the Fair so that you may determine which employers booths you will wish to visit. Don't close your mind to alternative possibilities and pay attention to employers whom you otherwise wouldn't have considered.

Prepare an introduction that is brief and succinct and yet which outlines your accomplishments and career goals. Don't over talk or cut across employers or recruiters in your enthusiasm. If you do, apologise and allow them to complete their conversation. Don't hog a recruiter's time; be conscious of others who may be waiting to speak with that person. Arrange to speak with them further at an alternative time and take note of the arranged time and date. Take their business card so that you may send a follow up letter, demonstrating high levels of courtesy and respect.

Take notes after each conversation with individual recruiters so you avoid confusion later. Where possible chat with fellow attendees where you can gain a sense of perspective from them based on their background and personal and professional experiences.

Behave in a professional manner at all times. Remember that you are on show for the duration. Employers will be watching you to see how you behave and interact with other individuals. You only get one opportunity to make a good impression and you won't get a second chance if you fail to take advantage of the first.
