Marketing Executive

Marketing Executive - Spokespersons, Making `Selling' Count

A senior managerial position is typical in most businesses and industry - the one responsible for spreading the word so to speak, the spokesperson of and for the business - product/service/brand and positioning.

As a marketing executive, you act in effect as a sales, marketing and advertising manager, and/or Advertising, Marketing, Promotions, Public Relations, and `Sales Manager', who plans, organizes, directs, controls and evaluates the activities of establishments and departments involved in commercial, industrial, wholesale and e-business sales, marketing, advertising and public relations.

Marketing executives are typically employed by commercial, industrial and wholesale establishments, marketing and public relations consulting companies and by government departments. Keen competition for jobs is expected.

Marketers come from all ages, both genders, diverse background, some with formal training and experience, some with the qualification and no experience, those without formal training, but years of experience and everything in-between and beyond work successfully and side-by-side in this professional pursuit. A sales career poses lots of attractive appeal to candidates. This sometimes results in tough competition, with lots of variety for employers to choose from.

There are different career paths and specialties available to you under this banner. As an avid prospective and even seasoned sales professional, the following is a summary of some of the main duties for some occupations in this broader occupational group:

  • Sales managers plan, direct and evaluate the activities of sales departments in commercial, industrial, wholesale and other non-retail establishments.
  • Marketing managers establish distribution networks for products and services, initiate market research studies and analyze their findings, assist in product development, direct and evaluate the marketing strategies of establishments.
  • Advertising managers plan, direct and evaluate the activities of firms and departments that develop and implement advertising campaigns to promote the sales of products and services.
  • Public relations managers direct and evaluate establishments and departments that develop and implement communication strategies and information programs, publicize activities and events, and maintain media relations on behalf of businesses, governments and other organizations.
  • E-commerce managers plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the design, development and maintenance of internet and intranet sites to manage an organization's internet presence including public relations, communications and commercial activities.

College graduates with related experience; a high level of creativity, and strong communication skills should have the best job opportunities. High earnings, substantial travel, and long hours, including evenings and weekends, are common.

Employment of advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012, spurred by intense domestic and global competition in products and services offered to consumers. However, projected employment growth varies by industry. For example, employment is projected to grow much faster than average in scientific, professional, and related services such as computer systems design and related services and advertising and related services, as businesses increasingly hire contractors for these services instead of additional full-time staff. On the other hand, little or no change in employment is expected in many manufacturing industries.
