Network Effectively To Secure The Position Of Your Dreams

Since childhood, many of us have had lofty professional dreams. Perhaps we dreamed of being the NBA star that helped our favorite team win the championship. Or maybe we fantasized about winning the Academy Award for our acting prowess. Often, our professional dreams involved fame, fortune, and recognition for a job well done.

As we grow older, we might abandon some of these dreams, realizing that we either don't have the talent necessary to accomplish these goals, or that we wouldn't want to have to deal with the negative trappings of fame and riches. Yet, it is still important, despite your limitations, to have some professional dreams.

Identifying your dream position

To begin with, it is important for you to identify your ideal professional position. In order to do this, you first need to assess your personal strengths. Are you a good communicator? A good leader? Are you an effective organizer? The answers to these questions will help you in your search for the ideal position.

Next, assess some of your likes and dislikes. Do you like working in a team environment, or do you prefer working on your own? Would you like to work in an office, or does office work bore you? The more you know about yourself and your personal preferences, the more likely it is that you will be able to identify your ideal job.

Mapping out a strategy

Once you have identified your ideal position, it is important that you map out a strategy for getting there. Critical in this effort will be your ability to network. Networking is perhaps the most effective way to find out about vacant positions, since many of these positions are not advertised in the classified section of your local newspaper.

But networking means far more, when you're talking about your ideal job. It puts you in touch with the type of people that might be able to help guide your career by serving as mentors. It also means that you can observe people who have the kind of job you want in order to ascertain their defining characteristics. In other words, networking will help to introduce you to the kind of people that you aspire to be.

Effective networking

Still, it is not enough to simply want to network. You must be able to network effectively. But how do you go about doing that? At this point, it might be good to put together a networking plan. This would include the types of places you plan to explore for networking opportunities. For instance, you might begin by joining professional organizations which represent people in your particular field. If you are a female or a member of a minority group, you might also join a professional group designed to assist people of your background. Don't feel as if you need to join a laundry list of groups. Rather, be highly selective in the groups you join. In this way, you can create a targeted networking campaign which suits your needs.
