The Non-profit Administrator acts as a general manager for a non-profit organization. Non-profit organizations are critical to our communities, providing assistance, education and services in a wide variety of areas. The non-profit administrator works in a position that allows him to use his management skills in a rewarding job that helps some area of the community in which he lives.

Non-profit organizations come in many varieties. Their purpose is to address a need or provide a service, either in the local community, or on a national level. They operate on a budget of donations, grants, and sometimes, government funding. They are a special type of organization in the eyes of the law. They don't pay taxes but they are not allowed to make a profit, either.

The Non-profit Administrator acts as the general manager for their non-profit agency. They are responsible for all day-to-day operational activity, including hiring, scheduling and training the staff, keeping books and maintaining required supplies and equipment. They handle building maintenance, paying bills and

Non-profit administrators often work closely with the citizens their agency serves, offering guidance, assistance and referral to additional help agencies. They work closely with sister organizations, sharing and swapping services and resources.

The Non-profit Administrator is also heavily responsible for obtaining funds for their organization. They may organize fund raising activities and help locate available grant money. Their ability to obtain money for their organization often means the difference between the organization thriving and closing its doors.

Non-profit administrators also oversee publicity for their organization. They ensure that members of the community who could benefit from their services are made aware that the services exist. They may organize advertising campaigns, community awareness programs and events to publicize their organization's work and mission.

A strong dedication to your agency's mission is critical for success in this position. The most successful Non-profit Administrators have some personal connection with the service their agency provides or the cause that it supports. This creates an internal motivation that goes far beyond that from a normal job. This kind of dedication will help the administrator to motivate staff and volunteers and make an impression on all those with whom he comes into contact. This passion will serve him well when called upon to make speeches about his organization for educational or fundraising purposes.

The Non-Profit Administrator should have a degree in business or non-profit administration, and should have completed coursework in management, accounting, customer service and public administration. They must have good management skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all types of people. They should have prior non-profit, fund raising and grant writing experience. Non-profit Administrators should be creative and have a flair for designing and organizing community events.
