Many individuals with previous sales experience enter the occupation without a college degree; however, a bachelor's degree increasingly is required.
Prospects will be best for those with the appropriate knowledge or technical expertise, and the personal traits necessary for successful selling. Tenacity, commitment, discipline and enjoying working with others and selling products and services are important personal qualities to have to be successful as an outside sales representative. It will require you to work independently, hitting and exceeding set targets within a given timeframe, generating leads, new business as you go along and/or cold calling at times if required. Lots of your time will be spend online, on the phone, e-mailing, talking with others, writing letters, following up and sales administration and paperwork, tracing, tracking, soliciting and keeping in touch with customers.
Regardless of the type of product they sell, their primary duties are to interest buyers and purchasing agents in their merchandise, and to address any of the client's questions or concerns.
Good employment opportunities are expected because of the need to replace the large number of workers who leave the occupation each year. Many salespersons work evenings, weekends, and long hours from Thanksgiving through the beginning of January, during sales, and in other peak retail periods. Opportunities for part-time and temporary work are plentiful, attracting people looking to supplement their income; however, most of those selling high-priced items work full time and have substantial experience.
