Figuring out your salary goals

Obviously, the research you perform will have a bearing on your salary goals. If teachers in your area tend to make about $30,000 a year, it's probably unrealistic for you to expect a teaching job to pay you $50,000 annually. But there are other factors to consider when attempting to formulate your salary goals.

For instance, you need to determine your rock-bottom salary needs. What do you realistically need to pay for food, housing, transportation, medication, and other costs? Would you be willing to cut costs in order to land the job you want? How much do you currently have in disposable income? The answers to these questions will enable you to establish realistic salary goals. If you have a clear idea of what your goals are, you will be in a much better position when it comes time to engage in salary negotiations.
