Planning Is Required For A Successful Sales Career
The best things in life often do not happen instantaneously. Rather, they are the result of months if not years of successful planning. For instance, athletes cannot hope to perform at the Olympic level unless they have first planned out their training strategy. Grammy Award-winning musicians often began their careers by planning what musical courses they would take.
The same principle should be at work in your sales career. You simply must plan out certain aspects of your career if you have hope that your career will take off. You cannot be satisfied with the status quo or expect progress to be made by accident.
Planning is proactive
Planning can be helpful to you because it is a proactive enterprise. It means that you are taking charge of your career that you are not allowing someone else to make your career decisions for you. It can also help to prevent you from becoming stuck in a dead-end job for years at a time.
Planning gives you focus
Many people fail to succeed because they simply lack focus. Their efforts are scattered and lack a coherent purpose. They rush from one activity to another, never fully realizing what they're accomplishing or what they're failing to accomplish. As a result, their career stalls, and they never take a breath to recover.
If you engage in some careful planning, you will improve your focus. You will prioritize your professional endeavors, determining which you should keep and which you should discard. In the end, you should engage only in those pursuits that will help you to reach your ultimate career goal.
Planning puts your mind at ease
Planning can also help to put things into perspective to take the long view of life. You are likely to gain confidence if you have a plan of action to follow. You recognize the fact that you have not only a concrete goal, but also a workable means for getting there. If you're relaxed, you're more likely to succeed in your professional endeavors.
Consider a variety of plans
It's a good idea to come up with a number of different scenarios when career planning. For instance, you might develop a one-year plan, a five-year plan, and a ten-year plan. This allows you to think about not only long-term goals, but short-term goals as well.
Individualize your plan
Your career plan needs to be individualized to suit your personal needs. You have to realize that a career plan is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Instead, think of your career plan as a business plan for yourself. You wouldn't expect McDonald's to have the same business plan as Microsoft so your career plan shouldn't be identical to your best friend's. The unique nature of your career plan may make it more likely that you will succeed in your aims.
If you are unaccustomed to planning, don't worry about it. You can learn to be an effective career planner. Be sure to consult some of your mentors to make sure that you're on the right track, and chances are good you will succeed.
