Recognize The Aspects Of Your Sales Career That Set You Apart From The Competition

A number of sales professionals assume that there is little that is unique about their experiences. They assume that most salespeople are just as skilled and experienced as they are. But that's not necessarily the case. And, by failing to recognize your own uniqueness in the marketplace, you might be shortchanging yourself in your career.

It is highly important that you recognize those aspects of your sales career that distinguish you from the competition. But how can you do that especially if you are unaccustomed of thinking about your career in those terms?

Make a list

If you are a seasoned list-maker, this should be an easy task for you. Compose a list of those skills that make you unique. Are you skilled at encouraging people to make multiple purchases even if they came into your store only wanting a handbag? Do you tend to get referrals from customers because of your stellar customer service? Do you serve as a cheerleader for the rest of the sales staff? These are some qualities that could, in fact, make you stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Also, think of any particular sales experiences that stand out in your career. For instance, did you once wait on a Presidential cabinet member? Did you sell jerseys to a championship high school team? Did you set a sales record at your place of employment? All of these things can help to show off your unique qualifications for a job.

Talk to your co-workers

You might also want to consult your co-workers in order to determine the unique aspects of your sales career. They may see things in you that you yourself don't recognize. Or they might remember milestones in your career that you yourself have forgotten in the busyness of everyday life. Turn to your associates at work in order to help to flesh out your resume.

Think of obstacles you've overcome

While you certainly don't want to dwell on your personal life in a job interview, there's nothing wrong with informing a potential employer about obstacles you've overcome in pursuing your career. For instance, perhaps you were dyslexic as a child and had difficulty learning how to read. Or maybe you grew up in a low-income household and had to work as a teenager to support your family. It's important to recognize the challenges you've faced in your professional life and how you've dealt with them. Undoubtedly, you became stronger as a result of these experiences, and that strength may serve to set you apart from the competition.

If you have difficulty identifying your unique qualities, don't despair

If you consider yourself to be an average person, you might have trouble coming up with a list of your distinguishing characteristics. If that is the case, don't give up hope. It may take time and patience for you to recognize your assets. If you maintain a positive attitude, you should be able to succeed at the task.
