Resigning Your Position With Dignity
You've just been offered a job with a more respectable title and a much better salary than you command now. You've been unhappy with your current position for some time, so the decision to leave is an easy one. You may feel as if you have been underappreciated at your workplace-and definitely underpaid. You have a strong urge to go in to see your boss and let him have it-some sweet revenge before you walk out the door for good.
However, before you begin typing up a bitter resignation letter, you might want to think twice about your exit strategy. No matter how badly you've been treated.no matter what kind of indignities you've been forced to suffer on the job.it is critically important that you resign your position with dignity. There are a number of reasons for taking the high road as you set off for your new professional adventure.
The need for future references
Even if you have little love for your soon-to-be-ex-boss, you need to try to leave your job on good terms. At some point, a future employer might want to inquire about your job performance at the company that you're now leaving. If you resign your position with grace, it is more likely that your manager will give you a favorable recommendation on down the line.
Concern for your fellow co-workers
For the sake of your fellow co-workers, it is probably best if you resist the urge to try to show up your boss as you head out the door. The bad feelings you create could permeate the workplace, making work more difficult for the friends you leave behind. Also, you run the risk of ruining the reputation of your former employer, which might actually come back to haunt you if you apply for another position later on.
If asked by your co-workers for the reason for your departure, it is best to say that you are simply looking forward to new opportunities. No one has the right to know what transpires between you and your boss. By being discreet, you can save yourself embarrassment and needless worry.
To maintain your good reputation
Maintaining a good reputation is especially important if you have been forced out of your job. Remember, the world does not need to know under what circumstances you left your position. Your company may actually be doing you a favor by allowing you to resign. It is best in such a situation to simply cut your losses and move on. You will not gain anything by dwelling on the situation. Once you resign, you'll need to be hard at work trying to re-build your career. If you leave in a huff, you could quickly earn a reputation for being difficult to work with, no matter how legitimate your complaints may be.
Final thoughts
If you are leaving your position unwillingly, you may be tempted to exact revenge on the company that is forcing you to resign. However, such vengeful acts seldom, if ever, produce positive results. You'll find that it is far better to hold your head high, no matter what the circumstances of your departure. That way, you can simply close the book on one chapter of your professional life and move onto the next.
