Securing References, Tips For Reference Success
References are a great deal like theatrical reviews they are an indicator of your past success, and they let people who have not seen your work know exactly what you're capable of. Believe it or not, they can be the most important factor in determining whether you get the job you've applied for. This means that it is critical for you to line up a good list of references as you begin your job hunt.
Reference basics
There are a few basic facts you should know about references. To begin with, not everyone is comfortable serving as a reference for a job applicant. There are many reasons for this. The individual may feel as if he or she doesn't know you well enough, or he or she might have difficulty gauging the quality of your work. This is why it is absolutely essential for you to ask people whether they would be willing to recommend you to future employers before you list them as references. This also provides you with some assurance that you will receive favorable recommendations from those on your references list.
You should also know what your current employer's policy is regarding providing references. Some companies now ask would-be employers to pay a fee for reference information. In fact, some businesses will not even confirm your dates of employment unless they are paid up front. If you know about such a policy before you leave your position, you might be able to obtain written confirmation of your work history before your last day on the job. That way, you can provide the information to your prospective employer free of charge.
Keep in contact with your references
A number of job seekers make a fatal mistake by failing to maintain contact with their references. Some people have faulty memories and, once you have left a particular job, they might have difficulty remembering you and your contribution to the company. Also, in today's society, people tend to change jobs frequently, so your references might have moved on and you might not even know it. In addition, it can be aggravating to a prospective employer to dial the telephone number of a reference, only to discover that the individual no longer works for the company listed on the resume. Make sure that the phone numbers and e-mail addresses listed for references on your resume are all current. That way, you can avoid some unpleasant surprises.
Take references seriously
Unfortunately, not all job seekers take references seriously. They mistakenly believe that the company they've applied to will not bother checking references. The fact of the matter is that businesses often will not hire an individual without checking with references first. Companies want every assurance that the people they hire are conscientious, capable, and honest. In other words, they do not want to take unnecessary risks. It is important when you gather references to make sure that the people you list are willing to be available by phone to report on your stellar qualifications. If all of your references are consistently unavailable, you might have a difficult time securing a job.
