Taking The Non-traditional Career Path

Has anyone ever told you that your dream career is not realistic? Did your guidance counsellor in high school warn you that you would never be able to support yourself in that line of work? Do your parents frown every time you bring up your goals and aspirations? A non-traditional career path can be a lonely one. However, it does not have to be. There are millions of people who choose non-traditional careers that are quite happy and successful.

So, what is traditional anyway? Well, a few things probably come to mind when you hear the phrase: traditional career path. College education, well known firm, slow and steady advancement. Alternatively, perhaps a medical or law degree, then a well known practice, and slow and steady advancement. Sound familiar? We are all told that being a teacher or a doctor or a lawyer will get us the stability and respect that we should want out of life. But what if your aspirations are different? What if the life you see for yourself involves breaking with tradition?

Many non-traditional careers involve the pursuit of the arts. Writers, painters, singers, dancers, and artists of every stripe seek out careers in the arts. Some of these people have formal training, some do not. Either way, a career in the arts, where you are solely supported by your artwork, is considered non-traditional.

Another non-traditional career path is one in which you pursue a career normally affiliated with a certain gender that is not your own. A male nurse, a female pilot, or a male librarian are all examples of this type of non-traditional take on career planning.

There are some drawbacks to this type of career though. Your support from family and friends may not be as strong as it would be for other more traditional pursuits. Also, you may draw negative feedback from peers.

However, there are some distinct advantages to having a non-traditional career. One of them is merely the attention. While some people might consider this a drawback, many people in non-traditional careers consider the attention that their difference draws to be flattering or inspiring, even when it's negative.

Another good aspect is the affect this person has on society. Breaking with tradition is historically the way that innovation and advancement are achieved. In addition, you can open doors to people who come up behind you, inspiring and coaching them toward success.
