Taxation Specialist
Our tax laws have become increasingly complex, and change on a regular basis. Taxation specialists are professionals who have expert knowledge in the area of taxes and can help individuals and businesses understand how tax laws work and situate themselves to avoid being over taxed.
Taxation specialists act as consultants to businesses and individuals on their own particular tax situation. They can advise businesses on what tax breaks are available for their industry and business type and help ensure that they take advantage of each of these. When working with individuals, they can help ensure that money is invested in the most tax efficient ways, and make sure that all deductions are taken when filing returns.
Taxation specialists typically work with clients at two different times. The first is during a financial planning session. At this meeting, the taxation specialist will examine the assets and other details of the business or the consumer's portfolio and make recommendations as to things that can be done to minimize taxation. This might mean putting more money in a retirement plan, or spending money in certain areas of home or business improvement. This meeting helps clients develop a long-term strategy for minimizing taxes.
Taxation specialists will typically meet with clients again when it is actually time to file tax returns. At this meeting they will evaluate income and deductions, and actually file returns for the year. Based on the results of the tax returns, they may then make recommendations of things to change in order to improve the taxing situation for the next year.
Taxation specialists may work at taxation advising firms, or be independently employed. They must have thorough knowledge of all tax laws, and how deductions apply in different situations. They act as a sort of financial advisor, since the types of accounts in which we place our money can have a big impact on how much tax we have to pay.
Taxation specialists are typically required to have a degree in finance or accounting. Many are CPA's. In addition to this education, they will be required to take courses on a regular basis in order to stay abreast of changes in tax laws. Some taxation specialists specialize in working with business customers while others work primarily with individuals.
Taxation specialists must be very detail oriented and organized. They must have a good memory and a keen understanding of tax laws and how they apply in different situations. They must be effective communicators, as part of their job involves explaining complex tax laws to their clients in layman's terms. They should also be able to work effectively under pressure and deadlines, as their workload will be heavy and stressful during the tax season each year.
As our tax laws become more and more complex, the need for taxation specialist will continue to grow. This is a hot career field today, and is likely to continue to be one.
