The Global Sales Director-the Key To A Successful Sales Strategy
The Global Sales Director in any organization has an exciting and challenging job. Tasked with the overall sales strategy for the company worldwide, this individual should be forward thinking, extremely knowledgeable about the product and the current market, and should be a dynamic leader. A corporation's Global Sales Director is typically responsible to the overall sale strategy. He will set policies about splitting commissions and taking over customers from channel to channel. He will be expected to ensure that the company is seen as a respectable and ethical corporation to do business with, from a buyer's perspective.
The Global Sales Director will also have responsibility for establishing new markets. He will be expected to anticipate emerging market areas and be adequately staffed to get to those new potential customers before the competition. He should have a clear understanding of how sales practices differ in different parts of the world, so that he can lead a team that is capable of selling in any market in any culture.
In addition to helping find and staff new markets, the Global Sales Director will also work closely with the marketing department to ensure that the overall marketing strategy and sales strategy are closely aligned. Sales must be fully aware of the marketing campaigns and must be prepared to sell in line with those campaigns. Conversely, marketing must clearly understand the challenges faced by sales in presenting the product and selling against the competition. It is the role of the Global Sales Director to ensure that marketing grasps these issues and markets the products accordingly.
A Global Sales Director should have a breadth of business experience. In order to qualify for such a position, a person needs many years of experience in sales, preferably in markets similar to those the current company targets. International experience is also important, as a keen understanding of a world market is critical to managing such a large sales base.
In addition, a Global Sales Director should possess great overall business acumen. He will be expected to understand financial statements and overall company goals; in fact he will be contributing to the creation of these goals. He should also have a thorough understanding of the products his sales organization presents. He should know how they work, and the problems they have, who needs to buy them, and how to sell them.
Finally, a Global Sales Director must be a great leader and motivator. He must consistently motivate his sales team to out perform last year, and to meet ever-changing market demands. He must show enthusiasm about his product and lead his team to success in a challenging corporate environment.
