Tips For Creating A Resume That Targets Home Based Employment Opportunities
1) Treat The Resume As Professionally As Any Other
Although home-based employment is not necessarily mainstream, a resume targeting these opportunities should be treated as professionally as any other resume. Even if the comfortable working environment of the home is casual, the resume should be polished. It should reflect the tone that the employee will set with their work, and should reflect the seriousness of the job opportunity.
2) Emphasize Technology and Computer Skills.
For most home based employment opportunities, computer skills are necessary. The resume should discuss and highlight computer skills such as wpm, software knowledge (if necessary), and Internet proficiency. As these skills are extremely necessary for working at home, leaving these out of a resume would be extremely harmful.
3) Stress Self-Discipline And A Strong Work Ethic.
Self-discipline and a strong work ethic are particularly important for home- based employment. Working at home provides many distractions that are not present in the typical working environment. Employers must know that their employees will be able to handle these distractions and still maintain a professional demeanor towards work. Acknowledging the importance of these qualities and providing evidence of their presence in their resume would greatly benefit anyone seeking a home based job opportunity.
4) Double Check Spelling And Grammar.
Because of the nature of home-based employment, most work will be done on a computer and online. In most cases, the employer will read over the work for any mistakes. An employer is less likely to hire someone who is consistently making grammatical or spelling errors. For this reason, spelling and grammar are extremely important. Before submitting the resume, be sure to double check the work or even have a friend check. It is simple to research common grammatical mistakes and scan the resume for any and all of them.
5) Target The Specific Line Of Work For The Home Based Employment Opportunity
As with any employment opportunity, most home based employment opportunities are specific jobs or lines of work. Thus, a resume should also be designed to target the specific job opportunity. Recognize which qualities would be most beneficial for the specific job or necessary tasks and design the resume to highlight these qualities or skills.
6) Emphasize The Use Of Deadlines.
Deadlines are a fundamental part of any workplace. However, they are part of the foundation of home-based employment. Without a boss, manager, or supervisor to record every move, self-discipline is necessary. Deadlines are plentiful for home based job opportunities and any previous experience with jobs that rely heavily on deadlines would be great to emphasize in a resume. This is where previous jobs such as paper pushing can be extremely useful.
7) Do Not Be Afraid To Elaborate On Career Aptitude
Career aptitude is important for any employer, regardless of the work setting. However, those who are lacking the previous work history or skill level to create the perfect resume may want to emphasize their career aptitude. This can be done by discussing the minimal previous experience with a particular job, but how the job resulted in success. This can be extremely favorable if the person applying for the job is lacking in computer skills. Although it is not necessary to outright say that they are lacking in this area, it may be productive for the applicant to describe their ability to learn new skills quickly.
8) Detail Previous Job History In The Most Favorable Manner
As with any job, the employer is going to want to know about the previous work history. Take the previous work history and detail it in the most favorable manner. Recognize what skills or qualities are obviously lacking (if any at all) and construct the resume to show that other skills can accommodate for their absence.
