Top Tips For Making A Job Offer

You've sifted through resumes, read through cover letters, conducted interviews and follow- up interviews. In short, you've done everything possible to ensure that you have found the right candidate for the vacant position in your business. Now that you've settled on one person, you must make a job offer.

You should know, however, that making a job offer is an art. There is a particular method you should follow in order to make sure that the process runs smoothly. Otherwise, you could find that you lose the job candidate of your dreams. Here are some top tips for making an effective job offer:

Make the offer as soon as possible

Granted, you'll probably have to interview a number of job applicants before you find the person you're looking for. The interview process takes a great deal of time, especially if you are also conducting follow-up interviews. You don't want to rush the process and make mistakes in judgment as a result.

However, it's important that you make an offer to a prospective employee as soon as possible. You have to realize that, chances are, the individual you've chosen has also gone on other job interviews. Therefore, he or she might land a job from another company before you're prepared to make an offer. By making an offer as quickly as possible, you increase the chances that you will be able to hire the candidate you want.

Make the offer as attractive as possible

It is important that you make your offer as attractive as possible. If the applicant initially reacts negatively to your proposal, chances are he or she will reject the job. The salary and benefit package you offer should be competitive with those offered by other companies. Job applicants are smart they know the kind of salaries and benefits they are likely to command in the marketplace. They are unlikely to settle for less than they're worth.

You should consider the fact that you may have only one opportunity to make your offer to a prospective employee. Therefore, make the offer in a friendly, upbeat manner. Indicate to the applicant that you will do everything possible to ensure that he or she will succeed on the job.

Be prepared to make a follow-up offer

If at all possible, you want to be prepared to make a follow-up offer after you've made your initial offer. Chances are that the job applicant will want to mull over your offer a day or two before giving you a final answer. There is nothing wrong with that, and in fact, you should welcome it. It shows that the applicant is a deliberative person who will not take things at face value.

Your follow-up offer should be attractive enough to really give the candidate pause to reflect. In fact, you should attempt, if possible, to offer the prospective employee top dollar. If you invest in high-quality personnel, you'll find that it will really pay off for your business. There is no substitute for an effective, conscientious worker.
