Understand What You Have To Offer For Job Search Success

In today's job market, you may feel intimidated by all the options. There are endless websites devoted to the aid of the job seeker. There are online job postings, resume services, interview samples, advice columns, and forums for particular industries. You also have the traditional classified ads, headhunters, employment agencies, and referral services. Add in the networking you are supposed to be doing, the follow up techniques recommended, and the stress of changing jobs, and this could be one of the most confusing times of your life.

So help yourself to succeed in your job search by simplifying some of it. Remember that all you really want to do is get the chance to tell an employer what you have to offer, why you would be great at their company, and how much you love the idea of working in that capacity. So to do this, it logically follows that you need to actually know what it is that you have to offer.

This may sound ridiculous. But you would be surprised at how many people actually have to look at their resumes to see what it is they are qualified to do. They have to glance down to see when they worked at that last job, to remember what their responsibilities were, and to remind themselves of the successes they noted on the document. This lack of preparation could prevent you from getting beyond the first interview, assuming you got there to begin with.

Before you even compose a resume, you need to think about what you have to offer a specific company. You will want to match the skills and experience listed on your resume with those required in the job posting. This means doing your homework for each job you apply for. What does the firm want in an employee? How much is education a priority to them? Do they want you to possess certain skills in the workplace or certain experience with software?

Answer these questions before you compose the resume. You may find that it works better for you to compose a resume that is based on skills rather than job history. This type of resume features your skills and specific experience at the top so that the employer does not have to search through the chronological history of your employment to find what they require. This is a good format for people entering technical positions or those requiring licenses or training.

After you compose your resume, review it. Review it more than once. You should be able to tell someone what is on your resume without looking at it. This will be a great asset in an interview situation.

Before your interview, review the job qualifications again. Make a list of any skills or experience you have that is not listed on your resume so that you can highlight them during the interview. You need to practice answering questions pertinent to the new position before you are in the interview situation to avoid clamming up due to stress. So practice with a friend a few times.

Overall, if you are clear on what you have that will exactly match what the employer is looking for; you will be prepared to make a strong case for yourself when it counts the most.
