Understanding The Recruiter Philosophy
The basic role of a recruiter in the job search market is to match candidates with viable job openings. The role includes looking out for the interests on the company as well as the client. In this way recruiters can provide both the individual and the company with a solution. Recruiters work in several ways but their primary professional alignment is to the business they are dealing with. They are often hired by companies to help source possible candidates, conduct interviews and select potentials. Recruitment agencies work directly with clients to help them fill available positions. They also liaise with job seekers and help them to find suitable job openings within their desired field. They can help with career advice, securing interviews, negotiating salary and terms of contract. Most recruiters take a percentage of their client's earnings for a period of time, sort of a finder's fee.
Recruiters put their credibility on the line when they recommend a job seeker for a position. Many recruiters have built relationships with the companies they service so they want to ensure they are putting forward suitable candidates. Before a recruiter will start networking for you it is likely you will have to meet with them. This is like an interview where you can establish the direction you want them to take you in. It will also be an opportunity for them to find out about you, your employment history, qualifications and remuneration expectations. This initial meeting is a good way for job seekers to really refine what they want and determine the kind of direction they will go in.
There are a number of things you can do to ensure your relationship with the recruiter or agency is a positive one.
- When calling an agency make sure you have a reference number for the job you are interested in.
- Be polite and patient when you call, recruiters may not have the time to provide extensive advice then and there.
- Be prepared for a long process. You may have up to four interviews with the agency and business.
- Make sure you are available for interviews during this process.
- Treat your agency interviews like a job interview. Don't turn up late, be professional and present yourself well.
- It is common for agencies to be bombarded with resumes. If you want to get results you need to target your job search.
- Don't ask for company information when it comes to job listings.
- Make sure you ask for all the information they can provide in order to make an educated decision about the vacancy.
- If you don't get a call back right away don't take it personally.
- You can follow up your application if you don't hear back but don't harass the recruiter. Recruiters deal with lots of applications so it is common for it to take some time for them to get back to you.
