Understanding The Role Of Technology In Your Job Search
Modern technology has seen advancements in the way job seekers and employers interact. The Internet is fast becoming a primary resource for finding a job. With online job banks, databases, recruitment agencies and classifieds the Internet is a one-stop shop for anyone looking for employment. It is also useful for employers looking to advertise their position to an expansive audience.
Because technology plays such an important role in your job search you need to understand the fundamental principals of applying and interacting online.
- Electronic resumes - These are what you should be using if your applying for a job online, submitting to a job bank, sending a resume via email or submitting information to a recruitment agency online. An electronic resume has the same information as a standard resume but it is formatted differently.
- Scanning technology - Many large businesses use scanning technology to sort through applications and resumes. This is basically where the print version of the resume is scanned into a computer to be stored in a database for later review.
- Keyword referencing - Just like a search engine computer programs scan through resumes looking for keywords. The keywords are programmed by a human reviewer and given a priority rating. The program then scans through resumes looking for the keywords. For every keyword present in your resume or cover letter it records a hit. The number of hits you get will determine where your resume ranks in the search findings. This type of technology is ideal for sorting through large amounts of information to find relevant candidates with the right skills and qualifications. Once they get the results the human employer can go through the top scoring resumes to find viable candidates.
- Keyword summaries - These are the job seekers answer to keyword targeting programs. At the top of the page you can add a summary of relevant keywords that you predict will be used in the search. This will just be a list of words and phrases that will help to get your resume into the top ten search rankings.
- ASCII - An American Standard Code for Information Interchange resume is basically an electronic resume format. These are called .txt files and they have no formatting mechanism. There are readable by pretty much all computer word processing applications making them ideal for job seekers.
- Job banks - This is where you can go to search and apply for jobs online. You can submit your resume via the site and set up a profile to show to prospective employers.
