Use Your Communication Skills To Good Effect In An Interview Situation
As a teacher seeking a job, you face innumerable challenges. For instance, you must be able to write a cover letter that will make an employer want to review your resume. In addition, you want to craft a resume that will interest a headhunter enough to call you in for an interview. However, once you do land that all-important interview, your challenges do not end there.
The interview could be the key factor in whether or not you are ultimately offered the position. As a result, you must put forward a stellar performance during the interview. You have to exude confidence and you must project a professional appearance. You must also use your communication skills to their full effect. But how is this done?
Maintain your focus
It is highly important during an interview to maintain your focus. You have to listen carefully to the interviewer's questions and answer them in a forthright, upbeat manner. You cannot afford to be caught daydreaming it could easily cost you the job. Pay particular attention to your body language. You want to display a friendly, warm demeanor. Try not to cross your arms in front of your chest that can signal anger or a refusal to communicate.
Speak in a professional manner
It is also crucial that you speak in a professional manner. You need to avoid slang at all costs. Speak as you would if you were talking to someone whom you admire. Make sure that you express complete thoughts and enunciate your words. If you mumble, you can easily lose the attention of your interviewer.
Demonstrate that you are a winner
During the interview, you want to show off your poise and confidence. Therefore, it is important that you communicate a positive, upbeat attitude. If you show any sign of negativity, chances are the interviewer will hold it against you in the end. However, if you show enthusiasm, the interviewer is far more likely to call you in for a follow-up interview.
Leave your worries at home
You need to forget your worries during your interview. If you are obsessed about the health of your cat or the hole in your roof, you won't be able to concentrate and you will not be able to communicate effectively. When you enter the interview room, think of the experience as if you are entering into a new phase of your life. Recognize that an interview represents work and you must be able to show off your best work, if you hope to land the job.
Stress your strengths
When at all possible, during your interview you need to emphasize your strengths. Talk about those times when you triumphed over adversity in your job. Think about the children you have helped during your career. Be sure to mention any special honors or awards you have received. In this way, you will be showcasing your talents during the interview. Such accomplishments are memorable and are likely to put you in line as a finalist for the position.
