Warehouse Operator


Warehouse operators work in a variety of industries. These laborers are tasked with working in or managing large warehouses for companies with central or large warehouses. Often these warehouses have separate buildings or separate areas for receiving, storing and shipping.

There are multiple levels of warehouse operator jobs, depending upon the level of seniority and the area of the warehouse in which you work. Some examples of tasks include:

  • Unloading, unpacking, moving, and loading materials and equipment; inspecting incoming items to verify conditions and quantities received
  • Preparing stock identification tags bearing coded information; places stock in proper storage locations; rotates stock as necessary
  • Gathering items from stock, verifying descriptions, and issuing materials, including flammable and hazardous materials, and equipment to fill appropriate requisitions
  • Operating self-propelled lift trucks, hand trucks, dollies, and other loading and moving equipment used in warehouse activities
  • Taking physical inventory
  • Driving trucks, up to and including two and one half ton trucks, to make deliveries to nearby areas
  • Operating an automated order processing system;
  • Filing purchase orders, directives, requisitions, receiver's reports and correspondence
  • Issuing supplies, electronic parts and components from storage locations according to approved requisitions; prepare requisitions and purchase requests for supply items as directed
  • Performing duties involved in maintenance, arrangement and cleanliness of the warehouse/worksite and its equipment
  • Studying available storage areas in order to estimate and allocate warehouse space according to size, shape, weight, and type of merchandise being stored
  • Maintaining accounts and reconciliation's of physical inventories using manual or automated system
  • Maintaining inventory levels in accordance with established guidelines and to meet customer demands
  • Operating various material handling machines such as forklift trucks, pallet jacks, and straddle forks
  • Maintaining good safety practices
  • Maintaining warehouse arrangements and maximizing space utilization to accommodate current stock

Warehouse operators with more seniority may be promoted to supervisor, and may manage employees performing the functions listed above, and may take on duties such as scheduling and assigning tasks to subordinates. They may also be responsible for interviewing, hiring and training candidates. Warehouse supervisors are also sometimes responsible for ensuring that warehouse items are properly secured, preventing theft and loss.

Warehouse jobs typically do not require any special education, but do require physical strength and stamina. The work is often very physically demanding and tiring. The job may also require a valid driver's license.

The job outlook for warehouse operators is generally good, and jobs are fairly easy to come by. There are many entry-level positions to be had. For the operator who maintains his physical strength, the career can be lifelong, with promotions to greater levels of responsibility along the way. Warehouse operators are used in a wide variety of industries. Almost any company that makes a tangible good has a warehouse in one or more locations.
