Why You Should Hire A Professional To Create Your Resume

Creating an effective resume is easy. All you have to do is make a list of your previous jobs and your skills, right? Wrong! One of the best things you can do to jump start your job search is to hire a professional to create your resume.

Why hire someone else?

A resume is your personal representative to a potential employer, so it is important that it communicate clearly and effectively exactly why you are a good candidate for a job. Most people have only written a few resumes in their life so naturally they are not as good at it as someone who writes resumes for a living. Even if you are a strong writer, it is a good idea to have a professional give your resume a final polish before you start sending it out.

Two types of professionals

There are two basic types of resume professionals. The first is someone who takes your own content, does minor editing and polishing if needed, and then creates an attractive layout for the document. They will proofread and check for grammatical errors, then provide you with a finished document in electronic and/or printed form. This is generally the least expensive type of resume work you can commission.

The second type of resume professional is someone who will work with you to create your resume content and put it into a final polished form. They are often writers with human resources or career counselling experience, so they have strong working knowledge of how best to capture your strengths and communicate them to a potential employer.

What to look for in a resume professional

The elements you should take into consideration when looking for a resume professional depend on the extent of services you expect to receive:

The Basics - If you are confident in your own content and want someone who will polish and put your material into final form, look for someone with strong proofreading and layout skills. Many copy and print centers have professionals on staff that can perform this service, as do most career and job counselling agencies. Ask for samples of past work and pay close attention to the price list. Sometimes prices are set on an a la carte basis so that you pay a separate fee for each activity (proofreading, layout, printing, etc.), while other times prices are set up as packages that include several activities in the set price.

Full Service - When you need more extensive professional services, though, you need to do a bit more research to find someone whose skills and personality match up with your needs. The person you select should establish a good rapport with you from the start and ask good questions to draw out key information about your background. He or she should have the experience to then construct strong action and result statements that draw attention to your skills and attributes. In other words, you want someone who knows how to make maximum impact with the fewest words, helping your resume stand out from the rest of the crowd. You can expect to pay more for these advanced services, but it is usually money well spent.
