Why Your Resume Determines Your Career
A resume is simply a self-marketing tool. It allows you to present your assets in the best possible way.
Your resume has to turn an uninterested reader into one who can't put down your resume down. Remember, the person doing the hiring is receiving hundreds, if not thousands, of resumes. He or she is probably not looking forward to reading all the resumes. So the person is probably going to do a lot of skimming.
Therefore, you've got to sell yourself in fewer than 30 seconds. Sometimes all the time you've got in 10 seconds to pique interest.
This means that if you have the ability to hold the hiring manager's attention in only 10 seconds, then you know that you have a chance of getting the job. And getting that job could be the stepping-stone that determines your career.
When you write a resume for a job you really want, you'll probably want to highlight all skills relevant to that job. Before actually writing your resume, take some time to select projects most likely to benefit you in your career path. By focusing on those projects, you can use your resume to help you determine your career.
Writing a resume can help you determine your career in other ways too. Resume writing forces you to look at the overall vision (or the big picture) of your professional life. What have you done so far to help your career? What should you be doing? What do you still need to do in order to achieve your career goals?
Once you have the answers to those questions, which can be figured out by writing your resume, you'll be able to figure out what short-term career goals you should set for yourself. For example, should you look for a mentor? Should you do more of a certain type of project? Use your resume to find out if you can accomplish something.today. Then do it.
Since writing a resume forces you to take a close look at what you've done with your working life so far, it also gives you a chance to determine if you're on the right career path. Only you can decide what the right career path is for you. However, the way to figure out the answer is to ask yourself a few questions. There's the general one and most important: Are you really doing what you want to do? If not, what should you be doing to get the job or career that you want?
Resume writing helps you determine your career path by helping you figure out if what you're currently doing is aligned with your desires, interests, personality and natural ability. Think of writing a resume as a career assessment. Use what it teaches you to make sure you're going where you want to with your career.
