Working The Temporary Tightrope

Perhaps you've just graduated from college and have found it difficult to locate a full-time job. Or maybe you had a job but became so demoralized you decided to quit. No matter what the cause, you now find that you are without full-time work and the paycheck that goes with it. What should you do?

Obviously, one of your priorities will be to conduct a massive job-hunting search. But that can take time and a good deal of money. With your resources dwindling, you might find it necessary to take on a part-time job in order to make ends meet. Or you might decide to take a full-time job that offers only a temporary commitment such as a month or two.

The challenge

If you are working a temporary job at the moment, you face a tremendous challenge. You want to devote your energy to ensuring that you do a good job for your temporary employer. However, you might also want to reserve some of your energy for your search for permanent employment.

As a result of this, you might feel torn between two high priorities: earning a paycheck now and earning a higher paycheck in the future. Consequently, you may find that you lose your enthusiasm for your current position or you lose the resolve to look for a permanent post.

Dual goals

If you are currently working the temporary tightrope, it is important that you recognize the fact that you have dual goals you need to achieve. You need to put in a stellar performance in your current job. There are many reasons for this. To begin with, it is vitally important that you hold onto this job for your financial well-being and for the sake of your career. On down the road, you may need a favorable recommendation from your current employer. Therefore, it is important that you take your temporary job seriously.

However, finding permanent work must also be a top priority in your life. After all, when your current employment ends, you'll want something to fall back on. A permanent job no matter how challenging is always preferable to a temporary job.

Maintain an upbeat attitude

It is vitally important that you maintain an upbeat attitude as you work your temporary job. Even if this is not the job you'd hoped for, it is critical that you give it your all. It has been said that if you work to excel in your current job, your next job will take care of itself. If you stay positive, you are more likely to find a permanent job in short order.

Realize it's only temporary

You need to recognize the fact that the situation you're facing is only temporary. Certainly, trying to work a temporary job while looking for a full-time position can be challenging, exhausting, and frustrating. However, you need to keep in mind that this, too, shall pass away. Therefore, try to make the time you spend in your temporary position as enjoyable as possible.
