Your Teaching Cover Letter Must Demonstrate Your Achievements And Successes

Through your work as a teacher, you are well accustomed to handing out assignments. You realize that, whether you're working with a kindergartner or a college-bound high school senior, it's important that any assignment be completed with an eye toward excellence. It's also a motto you probably invoked during your academic career.

You should look at preparing a cover letter as an assignment. Therefore, it should not be completed in a rush, with little thought devoted to it. Instead, you should take your time with it in order to fine-tune it. You want it to be the best it can possibly be, since you'll have only one chance to impress the company executive that will determine whether or not to call you in for an interview.

Take time to think

Your first task is to take time to think about the project at hand. For instance, in preparing a research paper for college, you probably spent hours jotting down ideas, conducting research, preparing an outline, and organizing your thoughts. While your cover letter is much briefer than a term paper it should only be a page it still requires a great deal of preparation.

Think about the major achievements in your professional career. What are you most proud of? Did you receive the teacher of the year award at school? Did a member of your class win a statewide spelling bee? Have a large percentage of your students gone onto college? Such information, when included in a cover letter, could help to impress a potential employer.

Decide on one major thing to focus on

Next, you should review your list of accomplishments and come up with the one achievement you wish to focus on. In essence, you'll be telling a story the story of how you made a difference in the lives of your students. You need to think of a way to tell this story as effectively as possible.

Experiment with a couple of different drafts. In fact, you might try three separate beginnings, three different bodies, and three different conclusions. By completing various versions, you will be able to experiment with language and structure. In this way, you're more likely to come up with a finished product that will state your case well.

Get a second opinion

It's also preferable to have your work reviewed by another set of eyes. Turn to a mentor or a teacher friend to look over your cover letter. Encourage them to provide you with constructive criticism. Your reviewer may come up with ideas that you had not thought of. Also, a reviewer with a critical eye can catch mistakes, such as misspellings and grammar problems that you might have missed. Chances are your reviewer will be able to tell immediately if your cover letter makes a strong case.

Don't be discouraged if your reviewer suggests that you try to draft additional versions. Remember, this is a trusted individual who has your best interests at heart. Your objective is to create a persuasive cover letter even if it takes 20 tries to do it.
